The Story Behind John Alden Knight’s Original Solunar Tables

Trusted by hunters and anglers for over 90 years.

A LEGACY THAT BEGAN WITH JOHN ALDEN KNIGHT

John Alden Knight devoted years to studying the natural patterns that influence fish and game activity. His research led to the development of the Solunar Theory and the Original Solunar Tables.

Developed more than 90 years ago, the Solunar Tables have helped generations of hunters and anglers identify the probable periods when fish and game are most active.

What began with Knight’s observations of the sun, moon and wildlife continues today through the Original Solunar Tables.

WHERE THE SOLUNAR THEORY BEGAN

From “Moon Up – Moon Down” to the Original Solunar Tables

MOON UP – MOON DOWN

Long before the Solunar Tables were developed, experienced hunters and fishermen had noticed that wildlife activity seemed to follow certain movements of the moon.

One old practice became known as “Moon Up – Moon Down” — planning time afield around periods when the moon was directly overhead or directly underfoot.

John Alden Knight took these observations much further. Through years of study, he examined the relationship between the sun, moon and periods of fish and game activity, eventually developing what became known as the Solunar Theory.

The word SOLUNAR combines SOL (sun) + LUNAR (moon).

From an old outdoor observation came a theory that would guide generations of hunters and anglers.

MEET THE KNIGHTS

JOHN ALDEN KNIGHT

John Alden Knight was a pioneering outdoor writer, lecturer, and lifelong sportsman whose study of fish and game activity led to the development of the Solunar Theory and the Original Solunar Tables.

His influence extended throughout the outdoor world. Knight wrote extensively about hunting and fishing and was recognized for his contributions to the sporting community, including his work with fly fishing and outdoor conservation.

RICHARD ALDEN KNIGHT

Richard Alden Knight grew up in the field alongside his father and worked closely with him to refine and continue the Solunar Tables.

An accomplished outdoorsman in his own right, Richard was a competitive fly caster and award-winning shooter. Together, John and Richard carried the Solunar tradition forward for generations of hunters and anglers.

More than a theory — a family legacy built in the field and carried forward through generations.
